Grid operators curtailed 8.13 TWh of solar power during April-June to maintain grid stability, even as India's peak electricity demand touched a record 270 GW, The Indian Express reported, citing the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's briefing to Parliament.
The ministry said curtailment rose from 2,417 GWh in April to 3,235 GWh in May before easing to 2,481 GWh in June. According to the newspaper, the curtailed electricity was equivalent to about one-and-a-half days of the country's total power consumption during the quarter.
The figures underscore a growing challenge for India's energy transition. While solar capacity is expanding rapidly, transmission infrastructure and grid-scale storage have not kept pace. Govt tells Parliament: India's solar capacity rises 57-fold since 2014
India's installed solar power capacity has increased nearly 57-fold since 2014 to reach 162.15 GW, The Economic Times reported, citing a government statement.
The government told Parliament that competitive bidding, expanding domestic manufacturing and private investment have driven the growth. Solar power is now central to India's target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
The expansion has been supported by large solar parks, rooftop installations, hybrid renewable projects and transmission infrastructure.
Centre to fund Perovskite PV manufacturing, ₹200 cr allocated for pilot project
The Centre has allocated ₹200 crore for a Perovskite PV Manufacturing Pilot Line under its Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development (RE-RTD) Programme for 2026-27 to 2030-31, Mercom reported.
The pilot forms part of the programme's total outlay of ₹436.93 crore for the 16th Finance Commission period. Perovskite solar cells use a different light-absorbing material and they are attracting global attention because they promise higher efficiencies, lower manufacturing costs and more flexible applications than conventional silicon-based solar cells.
The programme aims to strengthen domestic research, technology development, demonstration and commercialisation across the renewable energy value chain.
China introduces new rules to rein in solar price war
China has introduced new accounting rules aimed at curbing the destructive price war in its solar industry, Yicai Global reported.
The rules standardise how manufacturers calculate production costs for polysilicon, wafers, solar cells and panels, reducing inconsistencies across the sector.
China's photovoltaic industry has been hit by excess manufacturing capacity since 2024, squeezing profit margins and pushing many companies into losses. Of the 26 listed solar companies that have released first-half earnings guidance, only four expect to remain profitable. The rest of the project combined losses of CNY18.3 billion to CNY21.4 billion ($2.7 billion to $3.2 billion).
